On 15 March 2019, Australian national Brenton Harrison Tarrant, aged 28, carried out a terrorist attack against Muslim worshippers at the Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand. Armed with multiple firearms, he attacked people attending Friday prayers and livestreamed part of the assault online using a head-mounted camera. He killed 51 people and injured 40 people, making it one of the deadliest mass shootings in New Zealand's history.

Tarrant was arrested shortly after the attacks and was later charged with multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, and terrorism. In August 2020, the High Court of New Zealand sentenced him to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, the first sentence of its kind in the country's history. The Christchurch mosque attacks prompted widespread international condemnation and led to significant changes in New Zealand's firearms laws.
